Consider taking a systematic approach to the oral exam, working from the outside in:

Palpate the TMJ
Palpate the neck
Observe the perioral and lip areas
Observe (by manipulating tissues)
- Gums
- Teeth
- Soft and hard palate
- Tongue lateral borders and undersurface
- Posterior pharynx
- Floor of the mouth
Palpate the floor of the mouth
